Join our 12-week heart health and cardiac rehabilitation program.

For every 20/10mmhg increase in blood pressure above 115/70mmhg, there is twice the increase of cardiovascular disease risk. Alarmingly, depression is highly prevalent in cardiac patients, contributing to the development and progression of their condition, reducing quality of life and life expectancy.

Properly prescribed exercise medicine can significantly improve outcomes for those undergoing cardiac rehabilitation or with chronic conditions including:

  • POTS (Postural Orthostatic Intolerance)

  • Hypertension

  • Arrhythmias (Atrial Fibrillation and Atrial Flutter)

  • High Cholesterol

  • Heart Failure

  • Coronary Heart Disease

  • A pre or post-operative heart.

Heart health testing protocol

Our heart health testing protocol allows our clinicians to determine suitable and safe exercise prescription to treat, manage and prevent heart disease and heart conditions. The tests include:

  • Fit Test (developed by Deakin lecturer Steve Selig): Submaximal tests using a bike or treadmill are used to assess fitness, predict maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max), and evaluate exercise responses in patients where maximal effort is not feasible or desirable.

  • ECG – A wearable ECG device (not 12-lead ECG) monitors heart activity in response to a task, and can detect Atrial Fibrillation, a common heart arrythmia.

  • Biomarkers including heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation are frequently measured and assessed during exercise sessions, and anomalies reported back to your healthcare team.

POTS Specific Testing (Postural Orthostatic Intolerance)

Exercise is a recommended treatment approach for patients who are symptomatic with POTS (Fu et al., 2018) and exercise interventions have been shown to improve peak oxygen uptake (8%), cardiac size (12%), and blood volume (6%) in POTS patients (Fu et al., 2010).

CCA recognises that exercise is often poorly tolerated by POTS patients and has designed a program to maximise improved outcomes in a safe and supportive clinical space.

12-week Program

At Chronic Care Australia, we have established a 12-week exercise medicine program to improve the mental and physical health and overall whole person health care of those with cardiac disease and symptoms.

Not only do 85.3% of patients successfully complete our programs, the programs have also been clinically proven to:

✚ Reduce the symptoms of depression by 37.9%

✚ Significantly reduce blood pressure

✚ Increase patients’ motivation to exercise for up to 300 days

✚ Increase patients’ capacity for cardiovascular work once engaged in exercise.
