Key takeaways from the Dare to Care event about Osteo/Building Stronger Bones.

Chronic Care Australia is now accredited to deliver the revolutionary ONERO™ bone health program in Western Australia. ONERO™ represents a new gold standard in exercise medicine for people who are living with, or facing, osteoporosis.

Developed from extensive research and clinical studies, conducted under the supervision of Professor Belinda Beck at Griffith University, ONERO™ takes a pioneering approach to enhancing bone density and preventing osteoporotic fractures.

“When it comes to our bones, the research tells us not all exercise is equal,” Professor Beck said.

"Balance exercises aren't stopping bone loss, yet until recently, they were the only exercises being offered and advised for people with osteopenia and osteoporosis.

"90% of all hip fractures are the direct result of a fall. The only therapy to minimise falls is exercise — and that's a very targeted form of exercise. The right type of exercise prevents falls and builds bone. You get the double whammy, no bones about it (pardon the pun)."

Results to date have shown significant increases in bone mineral density (BMD) among ONERO™ clinic patients, with 86% of patients increasing their lumbar spine bone mass and 69% of patients increasing their hip bone mass.

What sets ONERO™ apart is its flexibility; it doesn’t require exercising five days a week. Studies demonstrate that exercising just twice a week effectively enhances bone density, strengthens muscles, and reduces the likelihood of falls.

The ONERO™ program is based on the outcomes of the LIFTMOR and MEDEX-OP trials. Click here for a list of peer reviewed publications about this research.

Building Strong Bones: Tools and Resources

CCA recommends visiting the Healthy Bones Australia website and utilising the excellent resources available which have been developed in conjunction with the Garvan Institute of Medical Research.

Know Your Bones online self-assessment tool. This is a simple first step to understand risk factors for osteoporosis and will provide an individual report which can be discussed with a doctor, if required.

Exercise and Bone Health fact sheet.

Exercise and Bone Density free exercise program for bone health. Healthy Bones Australia emphasise that you should not be intimidated by exercise if you have osteoporosis or osteopenia, and in fact that specific types of exercises are important for improving bone strength. Bones become stronger when a certain amount of impact or extra strain is placed on them. Healthy Bones Australia also recommend, and CCA agree, that exercise should be supervised especially when first beginning an exercise program - this is where CCA can help. Even if you are not local to our clinic, one of our expert team can design an exercise program for you that considers your whole health needs that you can then work on with your local exercise provider. Reach out to us to book an initial consultation and get started on your journey to healthy bones and wellness.

Clinical Trial from The Bone Clinic. Professor Belinda Beck examined the effect of 12 months of high intensity resistance and impact training (HiRIT) and balance training in a clinical setting on postmenopausal women with low to very low bone mass. You can access the summary report for this trial here.

Significant new research shows perimenopausal women are at a higher risk for musculoskeletal pain than their menopausal counterparts, and stresses that awareness of the ‘musculoskeletal syndrome of menopause’ is critical.

New Exercise Statement Released

On 8 February 2024 Healthy Bones Australia released a new exercise statement for physiotherapists and exercise physiologists titled Exercise Prescription to Support the Management of Osteoporosis for Physiotherapists and Exercise Physiologists. The statement was developed by an expert Working Group and Advisory Committee that included Belinda Beck. These where established following a National Forum hosted in 2023 to review latest evidence and key recommendations for Australia. It emphasises the importance of tailored exercise in the conservative management of osteoporosis which supports our approach at CCA.
