Exercise is Changing the Way we Understand Chronic Pain.

While exercise has been prescribed for chronic pain because it helps improve strength, mobility and physical function, a newly published scientific review suggests the benefits may be even more profound. The authors highlight that appropriately prescribed exercise can help retrain the way the brain interprets pain, build confidence in movement and support people to return to the things that matter most in their lives. Rather than focusing solely on muscles and joints, exercise appears to influence the psychological and neurological processes that contribute to persistent pain.

Through gradual, supported movement, people can:

  • Develop greater confidence in their body's capabilities

  • Reduce unhelpful beliefs about pain

  • Improve emotional wellbeing

  • Become less focused on pain itself.

The findings reinforce what we see in clinical practice every day — when exercise is individually prescribed and guided by experienced clinicians, it can become a powerful part of helping people regain function, independence and quality of life.
